Importance of the Survey

Survey of Cal Poly Pomona residents was conducted to better understand community needs. The results helped guide our proposal to ensure it benefits both the natural environment and the people who will use the space. our project not only increases housing, but also creates a space that improves student experience and quality of life.

How Our Design Met the Students Needs

  • mixed used buildings

  • walking paths green spaces (rain garden area)

  • open space near rain garden area

  • native landscaping for GSI

Educational Signage

Informing the Community

  • Educational signage highlights green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) features across the site.

  • Signs explain how GSI improves water quality, reduces pollution, and supports reuse.

  • The signage promotes environmental literacy, community engagement, and watershed protection awareness

  • helps meet the key project design evaluation criteria for sustainability rating systems and grant funding

LEED GOLD Certification

LEED v5 for

Building Design and Construction (BD+C)

for New Construction

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)  is a recognized green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This holistic framework for sustainable building design and construction was used to score the project design. LEED BD+C version of the rating system was used for this project due to the project type being considered new construction. The LEED rating system assessed the building design under seven key categories: Location and Transportation, Sustainable Site, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation.

Based on the assessment, the proposed building design scored 76 out of 110 possible points, placing the project within the LEED Gold certification level. Gold certification requires projects to achieve between 60 and 79 points, demonstrating that the design incorporates multiple meaningful sustainability strategies.

ENVISION GOLD Certification

The Envision framework was used to evaluate the sustainability and resilience of the proposed Cal Poly Pomona housing development. The project was assessed across several categories including Quality of Life, Leadership,

Resource Allocation, Natural World, and Climate & Resilience. Each category looks at how the project supports environmental protection, community benefits, and long term infrastructure performance.

Based on the evaluation, the project earned 387 points out of 804 possible assessed points, which places the project within the Gold certification level. Gold certification requires projects to achieve at least 40% of the total applicable Envision points, showing that the project incorporates several meaningful sustainability strategies.

Envision assessment shows that the project not only addresses student housing needs but also incorporates sustainable planning and design strategies that support long term environmental and infrastructure goals.
